Archos 80 G9 Android TabletSo here at Top 10 Android Apps we have been using the Archos 80 G9 for a few months, so we thought we would put together a review the Archos Android tablet for your delectation and delight.

Archos have a history of making personal multimedia players – that have always played a vast range of different formats. The idea being you can carry your TV, Film and music collection around with you. Now they have entered the Android tablet market with the G9 range of tablets. There is the Archos 80 G9 and The Archos 10.1 G9. I have been using the 80 G9.

You can see the full video review here:

The Archos 80 G9 is a powerful 8 inch tablet – now running Ice Cream Sandwich flavour of Android operating system.  It is at the lower end of the Android tablet price levels – being around $245. But don’t be fooled by the price. This is a powerful and fast machine, running a multi-core processor and the TURBO edition has a 1.5 GHz processor.  They claim to have a faster web experience of up to 50% faster than standard Tegra 2 tablets. So Ice Cream Sandwich looks great and works well. So you get the full benefit of the Android operating system.

They do a 250 GB hard drive version and a 16GB flash version with Micro SD slots. The 250 GB Hard drive version is a little thicker though.

But Archos are much more than this. As I said, there history is in personal media players, and it is the ability to play a wide range of media that makes this an ideal travelling companion. It will play FULL HD videos (that is H.264 High Profile codec for full HD 1080p). With the ability to plug your tablet into a HDMI socket on your tv – this means you can carry your HD movies around with you.  (You can even get an ARCHOS remote control app so you can control from your Android phone)

In addition you have the ability to stream over your wifi network, and stream media from your PC or MAC using the ARCHOS multimedia apps.Archos 80 G9 tablet

Let’s be honest – the Archos is not going to win any design awards. There are better looking tablets out there. And the build can feel a bit “plastic”. But this is a machine about function rather than form, and the 8 inch size is ideal for travelling. In fact, makes a 10.1 inch tablet feel more like a home tablet, rather than a travel tablet.

Another flaw is, when you power off to a deep sleep, it won’t charge. So you have to make sure that you just switch to stand by as you charge. I made the mistake of not realising this, ran the battery down, put it on to charge overnight not realising I had done a full power off, and so it completely ran of juice – and died. I had a new one sent – and have no problems since.

Overall, this is a great little device. No, it doesn’t look “sexy” – but it is a powerful media player, and the Ice Cream Sandwich experience is a good one – and at the end of the day, that is what you need. Factor in a price considerably less than some of its rivals, and you have a good value machine.  The Archos 80 G9 is definitely worth a look.
